Masterplans

Stromlo Forest Park (SFP) Masterplan process began in 2009 and established a strategy and vision for the Park, as well as aspirations for its future. In 2014 the ACT Government reconfirmed its commitment to Stromlo Forest Park by commencing a review and update of the 2010 Masterplan. This was a timely opportunity to consider any new or emerging opportunities or impacts arising from progressed design, planning and construction of the adjacent Molonglo residential precincts as well as broader recreational and regional trends.

The final Masterplan is a far-reaching vision that will facilitate SFP’s evolution into a vibrant, specialist centre for recreational and professional sports in Canberra. While cycling, equestrian, running and walking will continue to be key activities within the park it is also becoming an integral recreation resource for the residents of Molonglo. The ACT Government is confident the final Masterplan balances a range of new sport and recreation opportunities at the Park, while still being considerate of traditional user groups.

The construction of the new pool in the Stromlo Leisure Centre, which was a significant project discussed in the Masterplan, is now open and operating. A range of additional projects have also been identified as possible future developments at Stromlo Forest Park. Whilst not currently funded, tourist accommodation, an enclosed oval, district playing fields, a 12km road cycling circuit and an extension of the criterium track are also included in the final Masterplan, and will be progressed and consulted on, as funding becomes available.

As an aspirational document, the Stromlo Forest Park Masterplan may be updated in the future as needs evolve and recreational trends change. It does not commit the current ACT Government, or any future government, to provide partial or full funding for any of the identified projects.

Along with the final Masterplan, below is the community consultation report and the government’s response to the main themes that were raised during the consultation period. During the consultation period which ran from early December 2015 to 5 February 2016, seven written submissions and 744 online responses were received from the community. The number of responses is a clear indication of the popularity of the Park and the great deal of interest in its future and the ACT Government thanks the Canberra community for the feedback provided.

Tracks & Trails Masterplan

To ensure Stromlo remains one of Australia’s premier destinations for outdoor activities, the ACT Government announced the development of the Tracks and Trails Masterplan in 2023, enlisting World Trail, a global leader in trail design, to assist in its creation.

The process involved extensive research and consultation with park users and the broader community, giving each key user group the opportunity to contribute their insights. Community consultation was through YourSay and Public Consultation Sessions, consultation closed on 31 July 2023.

Following extensive consultation, the SFP Tracks and Trails Masterplan outlines a visionary approach for the future of the park's tracks and trails, ensuring that SFP continues to evolve as a vibrant specialist centre for both recreational and professional sports in Canberra. Designed with the needs of a wide range of users in mind—including mountain bikers, runners, road cyclists, pump and BMX riders, equestrians, walkers, and families—the Masterplan will be implemented in multiple stages to meet growing demand and enhance the park’s offerings.
