Managing Kangaroo Movement at UC Stromlo: Temporary Criterium Fencing Trial
UC Stromlo is home to a significant kangaroo population, with many animals migrating from the bushland to the green grass and water sources around the running track—particularly at dusk. While this natural movement is a key part of the site's ecosystem, it presents safety concerns, particularly for cyclists using the Criterium Track.
To address this issue, UC Stromlo has engaged with the Macropod Team from the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD). Following these discussions, EPSDD has recommended trialling a high fence with material and controlled access points. This measure aims to guide kangaroos away from the Criterium Track and modify their movement patterns. Fencing scrim material will be attached to the fence to enhance visibility and redirect kangaroos without causing them harm.
Temporary Fencing Installation Trial
UC Stromlo will be trialling the installation of temporary construction fencing at the north and south ends of the Criterium Track between February and April 2025. This fencing will connect to existing permanent fencing near the UC Stromlo Pavilion and the running track.
Access to the Criterium and running tracks will remain unchanged. During events, access gates can be closed to ensure kangaroos remain outside the fenced area.
